Lady Gaga comes up with another secret: she suffers from a debilitating mental illness.

During a “Today” show segment that aired on Monday, Lady Gaga, 32, revealed she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through a pre-recorded piece.
Lady Gaga made a powerful announcement to a group of young LGBT people in New York at Harlem's Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBT. youth on November 25. She visited the center as part of a collaboration between her foundation, Born This Way, and the NBC morning show as part of the #ShareKindness campaign, where she shared one of her 'deepest secrets' with the homeless kids at the shelter.
"I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day. My own trauma in my own life has helped me to understand the trauma of others." said Lady Gaga.

In 2014 Gaga publicly revealed that she had been raped when she was 19 which has haunted her even in her later life. It took her seven years to tell anyone about the experience.

'I told the kids today, "I suffer from PTSD." I've never told anyone that before. So here we are.' said Lady Gaga.

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, or other threats on a person's life. Symptoms may include disturbing thoughts, feelings, or dreams related to the events, mental or physical distress to trauma-related cues, attempts to avoid trauma-related cues and alterations in how a person thinks and feels.

'My own trauma in my life has helped me to understand the trauma of others,' said Lady Gaga, 'The kindness that's shown to me by doctors as well as my family, and my friends, it's really saved my life.'

Lady Gaga is an outspoken advocate for victims of sexual assault and violence.

Lady Gaga's Oscar-nominated song ''Til It Happens To You", which was featured in the documentary The Hunting Ground, about campus rape, details the harrowing experience of what it is like to be sexually assaulted.

Lady Gaga, who is currently in London for work, tweeted Monday about the importance of sharing her experiences with others.

'Today I shared one my deepest secrets w/ the world. Secrets keep you sick w/ shame,' she wrote on Twitter.

In the open letter, Lady Gaga Wrote, 'It is a daily effort for me, even during this album cycle, to regulate my nervous system so that I don’t panic over circumstances that to many would seem like normal life situations.'

I am continuing to learn how to transcend this because I know I can. If you relate to what I am sharing, please know that you can too,' the Joanne singer added.

During her visit to the shelter, 32-year-old Lady Gaga brought along clothing, gifts and donuts for the teens, She also spent a few hours sharing her own struggles and experiences, including her battle with mental illness along with tips to cope with inner struggles.

“Meditation helps me to calm down,” Lady Gaga told the teens. “I don't have the same kind of issues that you have, but I have a mental illness and I struggle with that every day so I need my mantra to help keep me relaxed.”

Gaga performed "Million Reasons," one of the songs from her latest album, "Joanne," for the group. She also let every staff member and teen take a selfie with her individually, the center's founder and Executive Director, Carl Siciliano, told CNN.

'Lady Gaga has always been extraordinarily supportive of the LGBT community," Siciliano said. "She was remarkably unguarded, open and available to each individual young person.'

Lady Gaga's revelation comes shortly after she declared that fame doesn't make people happy.

In an open letter posted on her foundation's website Wednesday, Lady Gaga writes that she finds it difficult to stay calm during normal everyday activities, including "leaving the house or being touched by strangers who simply want to share their enthusiasm" for her music.

Despite her trials and tribulations, Gaga says she's "continuing to learn how to transcend" the condition.

Lady Gaga wishes to lend support to everyone suffering from PTSD, including servicemen and women, because, according to her, "no one's invisible pain should go unnoticed."
